The Sumo Tournaments are conducted every year and each year there are
six grand sumo tournaments that been divided at different areas. Three at the
Sumo Hall (Ryogoku Kokugikan) in Ryogoku ,Tokyo in January, May and September.
One each at Osaka in March, Nagoya in July and Fukuoka in November. Each
tournament begins on Sunday and runs for 15 days and end on Sunday as well.
All
wrestler in the top two divisions known as sekitori has one match per day while
the lower ranked wrestlers complete in seven match around one fight every two
days. Each day is structured so the highest-ranked contestants compete at the
end of the day. The match will start in the morning with the jonokuchi
wrestlers and end around 6 in the evening with a fight involving the yokozuna.
The wrestler who wins the most matches over the fifteen days wins the
tournament championship for his division. If there is a tie between two
wrestler at the top, they will fight with each other and the winner takes the
title and presented with the Emperor’s Cup. Also other numerous prizes mostly
from sponsors and there will be a victory ceremony at the end of the
tournaments to celebrated the winner of the tournaments.
